Artist's Comments

I spent some time trying to capture hummingbirds with my camera- it's tough, even with a feeder right outside my back door. This is one of the photos that made the cut- I enjoy this shot a lot, maybe becuase it's one the few where a hummingbird was still. A great side view, and I suspect the hummingbird was well aware that I was peeking out of the doorway at it.

That is a gorgeous shot! Hummingbirds are hard to photograph... I've tried, with abysmal results. I wonder what kind it is. Where I live, there's only one kind around.. the ruby throated.

Ah, ruby throats are agressive- around here, they are well known for divebombing people.
I have no idea what these hummingbirds are, I just call them greenbacks, orangebacks, and ruby throated.

Yes! I have had a ruby throated divebomb me. I read that when there's a hummingbird feeder, only one r-t will drink from it, as they're very territorial. I hatched a stupid plan to see if it was true. I went to a feeder and hummed (yes, I really did) around the feeder, until one came and started flying angrily around my head. It was great. *laugh*

This one is great too. I like it more than the other one I commented on. Again, great job!

Wow this is great!

I've never been divebombed by any hummingbird, just curiously looked at as they flutter up in front of you to see what you are. ^^ We have different kinds here in south Mississippi, including Ruby Throats. And yes, they guard the feeders quite well. If only they could guard our homes from intruders lol they'd be better than dogs at attacking!
